What is an IP Blacklist (RBL/DNSBL)?
A Real-time Blackhole List (RBL) or DNS-based Blackhole List (DNSBL) is a database of IP addresses that have been flagged for sending spam, hosting malware, or engaging in botnet activities. Mail servers like Gmail and Outlook use these lists to block incoming emails from those bad IPs.
Why am I on a blacklist? I don't send spam!
If you are on shared hosting, another customer on the same server might be sending spam, thereby ruining the reputation of the shared IP address. Alternatively, your server could be compromised (e.g. a hacked WordPress plugin) or you might be sending newsletters without proper authentication (SPF/DKIM/DMARC).
How do I get delisted?
First, fix the root cause of the spam. Then, visit the specific blacklist provider that flagged you (e.g. Spamhaus) and look for their "Delisting Request" form. Many providers will automatically delist your IP after a few days of clean traffic, while others require manual intervention.
